Mental Health

Challenge

How can the mental health care system increase access to high-quality care while reducing barriers to care such as stigma?

How RAND Is Meeting the Challenge

  • Examining ways to improve access by integrating mental health treatment into other settings
  • Focusing on how to improve access and quality for specific populations, such as veterans, students, and low-income families
  • Developing and evaluating interventions to improve the quality of mental health care

Mental health reform efforts in the United States seek to increase access to mental health care, deliver it efficiently and effectively, and identify and disseminate evidence-based practices to improve care. At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic has altered, at least temporarily, the way mental health care is delivered.

Mental health research in RAND Health Care has examined the effects of these changes, including:

  • mental health providers’ use of telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • the use of telemedicine to help safety net health centers improve access
  • the impact of a public-facing mental health promotion campaign in California, with a special focus on Los Angeles
  • emerging models for providing remote care for opioid use disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
